Coating Development

Coating research and development is a key part of many companies’ efforts to maintain competitiveness in a fast-moving world. Research institutes and universities are also pushed to deliver working solutions for projects and their research customers. Thermal spray processing is still in some senses a dark art due the vast number of variables involved in the process itself.

Very often the development process can benefit from an outside perspective bringing in new knowledge to an existing team. This is especially apparent in situations where a new material, coating type or end application is involved.

Feedstock Selection

Coating Materials

Choice of the right powder feedstock at the start of a project can sometimes make the difference between a fast development and a painful one. Often, the chemical composition of the material is considered early in a project but the technical specifics of the powder such as manufacturing process, size distribution, morphology, etc., are not given enough consideration.

Different powder types typically have their specific performance attributes that may make or break an application.  A holistic approach should be taken when selecting feedstock powders that considers what we need the powder to do and how we intend to treat it to achieve the coating end goals.

Powder Development

It is not often that a new powder is developed for a coating application. Approaching this challenge should be taken with great care as bad choices can be costly.

  • Choosing important powder requirements can vastly improve the outcome of development
  • Powder manufacturers can develop specific solutions but, customer input is key to success

Previously experienced in the development of thermal spray materials for porous coatings (TBC’s & Abradables) as well as dense coatings (dense segmented TBC’s and environmental barrier coatings).  Thermal Spray Innovations can help you navigate this process.

Coating Partners

Coating Contacts and links

For situations where customers require external spraying capabilities, TSI is partnered with PTC Innovation in Sweden.

PTC Innovation retains access to the thermal spray facilities at University West, Production Technology Centre. Processes available include plasma spraying (F4-MB & Axial III), HVAF (UniqueCoat M3), Flame spraying. Coating evaluation can also be arranged with the partners.

Thermal Spray Innovations is also happy to work with other coating shops or research institutes where needed.
