Suspension Spray

Suspension spray processing is a breakthrough method for the processing of fine feedstock materials (ceramics, carbides, metals etc) in a liquid carrier medium for thermal spray application. The fine scale materials on the order of microns to hundreds of nanometres allows for coatings with unique structures and properties.

Only in the last 6 years have the conditions been right to bring suspension spray from a research tool to a production technique. With the development of industrial thermal spray equipment and suspension manufacturing, its finally possible to apply suspension-based coatings on a large scale.

Suspension Spray Experience

Suspension thermal spray is still evolving rapidly, with new  and potential applications coming to the fore each year. Due to its relatively new status, entering the suspension spray field is challenging, providing a steep learning curve with many potential pitfalls. The goal of Thermal Spray Innovations is to help customers tackle those challenges with previously gained technical and practical experience.

Coating Development

Extensive experience in developing thermal barrier coatings with suspension spray: –

  • Columnar and segmented coatings

Experience developing spray parameters for dense coatings, for various applications

Dense wear resistant coatings: –

  • Alumina, Chromia, Titania, Composites, Carbides etc

Dense coatings for environmental resistance: –

  • Rare earth silicates – environmental barrier coating

Suspensions

Experienced in the design and specification of suspensions for specific coating goals: –

  • Suspensions need to be customised to the final coating targets to achieve the best performance in the application process
  • Bad choices in suspension spec can lead to failed coating development, loss of time and money!

Expertise in storage, handling, and loading suspension at both the R&D and industrial level: –

  • Suspensions require different handling procedures to working with spray powders

Equipment & Training

Support with the design and set-up of suspension plasma spray cells: –

  • Selection of equipment
  • Advice on design and layout of the facility including ancillary requirements

Start-up and training: –

  • Help with initial machine start-up
  • Training of personnel for machine handling
  • Personally involved in the installation of 2 suspension oriented spray facilities in the last 8 years
